Going to Sunrise

I love the idea of becoming the kind of person who goes to sunrise. Waking up ridiculously early in the morning to catch those beautiful colours spreading across the horizon and soaking them all in like an elixir for the soul, sand between my toes, and salty air in my lungs.

Only I’m landlocked, living in a suburban area I dream quite heavily of leaving well and truly behind one day in favour of a small, quiet costal town. And although sunsets are beautiful no matter where you are in the world and I do enjoy watching the sun rise and set from my kitchen window, I feel like they’re even more stunning when you’re looking out to sea or better yet in the sea.

The beach I usually visit well… as you can see the sea is hardly visible early in a morning or in the evening. It drifts so far out it’s absolutely miles away. So as much as I want to paddleboard and watch the sun rise out on the water I can’t, not unless I want to walk towards a quickly incoming tide and end up in a predicament involving the coast guard.

Never waste any amount of time doing anything important when there is a sunset outside that you should be sitting under. — C. Joybell C

So instead when I visit here I sit on the beach, beanie on and flask of tea in hand because it’s bloody freezing but I’m awake (barely) and the world is still and quiet, just the way I like it. It’s as if I’ve got the whole world just to myself for a while.

Even if it’s just a weekend getaway for now, I can start living that life in small pockets. Mornings on the water in a nearby lake, long walks in the park, quiet moments with a warm drink in hand. And in a sense, in these moments, the life I dream of already feels just a little more within reach.

Just as long as I don’t hit snooze.
